These major restaurant chains got Fs for their antibiotic policies

The analysis reviewed plans and methods across beef, pork, turkey, and poultry supply chains. While 15 chains have applied antibiotic plans for chicken, only 2, Chipotle (CMG +0.63%) and KFC (YUM-0.93%), gained top marks for using limitations to all types of meat they offer.

The record shows up in the middle of expanding alarm over antibiotic resistance, which the United State Centers for Disease Control and Avoidance (CDC) calls “among the globe’s most urgent public health issues.” In 2019, antibiotic resistance was linked to 1.27 million deaths worldwide, consisting of over 35,000 in the united state, where 2.8 million antibiotic-resistant infections happen every year. Antibiotic resistance develops when germs evolve to hold up against existing drugs, making infections more difficult to treat and frequently deadly.

“The spread of superbugs makes typical clinical procedures like dialysis, surgical procedure, cesarean areas, chemotherapy and organ transplants far more harmful,” the not-for-profit said in the record. “The biggest driver of the spread of these lethal germs is the overuse of antibiotics both in human medication and in the production of food animals.”

The report was released in late November by the Food Animal Problems Trust Fund (FACT), which promotes the humane and risk-free production of meat products. In it, the team stated that food business play a critical function in combating the spread of deadly antibiotic-resistant superbugs.
